What is PLA

Polylactic acid, usually referred to as PLA, is a thermoplastic monomer made from organic, regenerative resources like sugar cane or maize starch. Contrary to the majority of plastics, which are made from fossil fuels by distilling and polymerizing petroleum, PLA is created from biomass resources.

Despite the differences in the raw materials, PLA may be manufactured using the same machinery as petrochemical plastics, which makes the manufacturing procedures for PLA rather cost-effective. After thermoplastic starch, PLA is the bioplastic that is made the second most frequently. Its properties are similar to those of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polystyrene (PS), and it is also biodegradable.
